Using Google Calendars with Schoology
As our district has moved to a full 1 - 1 iPad rollout, Schoology has become a very popular choice for a learning management system for the classroom. Teachers have become more and more comfortable posting their curriculum and offering different resources to their students. That being said, the calendar feature on Schoology is still not perfect. In Schoology, if you assign a date to an assignment, it will show up in the students upcoming assignments. This is great! However, what about all of the other "stuff" that you do in class that are just as important. Posting an agenda is a great way to keep kids in the know. How many times have you had a absent student come to you and say, "I wasn't here last class, did you do anything?". Now they do not have to ask.
I recently sat down with math teacher, Ms. Snyder, and we talked about how she liked last year when she used her Google site and had a Google calendar embedded right into the site. After talking, we decided to merge the two systems together.
Ms. Snyder was able to take the Google calendar that she loved and embed that calendar right into her Schoology site. Now when her students go to their Math Schoology class, they will see a page for her course calendar.
When they click on that page,
they will immediately be able to see her Google calendar she created for her class.
When the students select agenda, they see this:
What is great about this feature, is that Ms. Snyder can manage this calendar from her desktop, phone, or iPad and it will automatically update in her Schoology course. Plus, the biggest bonus of all, her students always know what happened in class. If they are absent, they can go to any day and just click the agenda for that day.
This feature has received excellent feedback from the students. They have expressed that they appreciate having this access.
Interested in giving this a try? Here are instructions on how to create a Google calendar and embed it into Schoology.
I also want to point out that this embed feature in Schoology will work for any other product that has an embed code (documents, videos, simulations, etc).
Have you used the embed feature in Schoology? Share below. We would love to learn from you.
